About the Department

The Department of Chemical Engineering at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) is one of the pioneering engineering departments in Bangladesh, established in 1948. Over more than six decades, the department has been a cornerstone of engineering education and research, producing graduates who have gone on to distinguished careers in industry, government, and academia across the world.

The department offers a four-year B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering (B.Sc. Engg. (Chem.)), postgraduate M.Sc. Engineering, and doctoral Ph.D. programs. From 2020 onwards, 120 undergraduate students are admitted each year. With a strong emphasis on both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, the curriculum is regularly updated to reflect global developments in the field — the current B.Sc. curriculum was approved by the Academic Council in July 2023.

Research in the department spans a diverse range of areas including process systems engineering, environmental engineering, energy and fuels, biochemical engineering, polymer & petrochemicals, process safety, and materials science. The department also provides industrial testing and consultancy services through the university's Bureau of Research, Testing and Consultation (BRTC).
